The costs of becoming “political”? Influencers and the decline in curiosity

Even though I enjoy thinking about politics, it can be easier to have a political conversation at times with someone who is not invested in it. Because they have not been completely indoctrinated yet, they don’t particularly care so will not out of the gate reject what you say or affirm it either. Or nitpick! You can often get a more common people reaction. If you want to be less like- able get into politics 😂

Seriously though, there is a crisis of authority of sorts. Instead of seeking advice from mature people who have been there and are able to think multidimensionally, we have influencer guided politics. This is often guided by clicks, sensationalism, and binary thinking.

With the smorgasbord of sources of influence offering essentially the same thing, I can’t even necessarily advise getting into “politics”. i’m not saying everyone needs to go on my journey, I understand everyone starts somewhere. But I think the online sphere and way people consume, including myself has changed significantly. I feel like the limited options used to encourage curiosity. Now I’m afraid they might encourage stasis, and confirmation bias even more.

So, instead of hearing about something and going, “what’s that?” and “let’s dive in” followed by, “let’s hear from the horses mouth themselves and try to understand what the arguments are and are not” - I feel like people are happy where they are at listening to portrayals of others by influencers. It becomes about social identity and portrayal under the guise of being about “ideas”.

I won’t say I’m impervious to it’s influence.
The happy accident is people are able to escape this matrix of thought, and grow tired of it when they see it is not doing them well.
